From coal mine and rail safety assessments to general pre-employment medicals, TSMP has been supporting Townsville's employers for over 20 years. Our experienced team delivers thorough, efficient assessments with minimal disruption to your operations.
Pre-employment & Periodic Medicals
Employment medicals help ensure that workers are fit for the specific demands of their role. At TSMP, our doctors and allied health team bring decades of experience across North Queensland's key industries, including mining, resources, transport, construction, and maritime.
We understand the importance of a timely result. Whether you need a single pre-employment assessment or periodic health surveillance for an entire workforce, we work with employers to deliver efficient, high-quality assessments without unnecessary delays.
Our doctors are Examining Medical Officers (EMOs) for the Queensland Coal Mine Workers Health Scheme (Coal Board Medicals), and we hold specialist qualifications across occupational health, rail safety, commercial driving, and hazardous substance surveillance. We also have certified Medical Review Officers (MROs) on staff to support your alcohol and other drugs (AOD) policy.
Employers and HR teams are welcome to contact our dedicated corporate team directly to discuss your requirements, arrange accounts, or coordinate group bookings.

For Candidates
Preparing for your assessment
Being well-prepared helps the assessment run smoothly and ensures the most accurate results. Please share the following with candidates ahead of their appointment.
What to bring
Photo ID with full name and date of birth (driver's licence or passport — photocopies not accepted). Prescription glasses or hearing aids if used. A list of your current medications.
What to wear
Loose, comfortable clothing and closed-in footwear — particularly if a musculoskeletal or fitness assessment is included.
Before an audiometry test
Avoid exposure to loud noise — including loud music, motorbike riding, or air travel — for at least 16 hours before the test. Let us know if you have a cold or ear wax build-up, as this may affect the result.
Before a spirometry test
Withhold bronchodilator medication, such as reliever or preventer puffers, (if safe to do so) for 4–6 hours prior. Avoid alcohol for 8 hours, smoking or vaping for 1 hour, and vigorous exercise for 1 hour before the test. Avoid tight clothing.
Drug & alcohol screening
You will be asked to provide a urine sample and may be supervised. Bring a list of all medications — prescription and non-prescription — taken in the last 30 days. For breath alcohol, avoid eating, drinking or chewing gum for 20 minutes beforehand.
Timing
Arrive 20 minutes early to allow time for paperwork. A basic medical takes approximately one hour. Assessments including drug screen, audiometry and spirometry take around 1.5 hours. Complex assessments with fitness testing may take up to two hours.
