Planning a Trip? Here's Why Your First Stop Should Be Our Travel Clinic

You've booked the flights. You've started a Pinterest board of your dream destinations. Your suitcase is half-packed with optimism. But have you thought about what's living in the soil, the mosquitoes, or the ticks waiting for you at your destination?

At Townsville & Suburban Medical Practice (TSMP), we believe that great travel starts long before you reach the airport, and a Travel Clinic consultation is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family before heading overseas.

What Is a Travel Consultation at TSMP?

TSMP is a licensed member of Travel Clinics Australia and Townsville's dedicated travel health specialist. Our medical team aren't just experienced clinicians — we're seasoned travellers ourselves. We understand the excitement of heading somewhere new, and we want to make sure you come home with great memories, not a preventable illness.

When you book a Travel Consultation with us, here's what you receive:

  • A personalised, printed and bound travel health book tailored specifically to your itinerary — including disease profiles, current outbreak alerts, and contact details for medical facilities and consulates at your destination

  • A free pocket medical guide including your international vaccination certificate

  • Detailed travel advice on required vaccinations, preventive medications, and travel kits — all available in a single visit

  • Access to the most up-to-date travel health information, including active disease outbreaks around the world

We provide advice to private travellers, families, corporate travellers, travel agents, and other health professionals.

Why Can't I Just See My Regular GP?

Your regular GP is wonderful — but travel medicine is a specialised field. Many general practices don't stock the full range of travel vaccines, meaning patients often need to chase scripts to pharmacies, wait for orders to arrive, and return for multiple appointments. At TSMP, vaccinations and medications are stocked and dispensed on-site, so you can walk in and walk out fully prepared in a single visit.

As a Travel Clinics Australia member clinic, we also have access to specialised vaccines that require regulatory pathways beyond a standard prescription — more on those shortly.

A Tale of Two Destinations: Why Your Itinerary Matters

To show you just how specific and important travel health advice can be, let's look at two very different dream trips — and the interesting vaccines and medications that go along with them.

Scenario 1: Exploring the Baltic States and Central Europe

Imagine you're heading to the Czech Republic, Austria, and Slovenia for two weeks of hiking through beautiful forested valleys, cycling between medieval villages, and camping under the stars. Sounds idyllic — and it is. But those gorgeous forests are home to a risk many Australian travellers have never heard of.

Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection of the central nervous system caused by a flavivirus transmitted through the bite of infected Ixodes ticks. It is endemic across much of central and northern Europe, as well as across northern Asia, and the risk is highest from April to November — prime European travel season.

What makes TBE particularly concerning is that ticks are tiny, their bites are often painless, and travellers frequently don't realise they've been bitten at all. Symptoms can progress from flu-like illness to serious neurological complications including encephalitis, meningitis, and paralysis. Up to one in three people who develop neurological disease are left with long-term effects including cognitive difficulties and coordination problems.

The vaccine: There is a safe and effective vaccine for TBE, and it's one we can access and order in for our patients. This is not a vaccine available on a standard script at your local pharmacy. In Australia, TBE vaccine requires a specialist access pathway through the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). This makes it absolutely essential that you see a specialised travel clinic like TSMP, and that you book well in advance of your departure. The standard course involves three doses over several months, though an accelerated schedule exists for travellers with limited time before departure.

Beyond vaccination, we'll also advise you on tick-bite prevention: the right insect repellents, permethrin-treated clothing, and how to properly check for and remove ticks after time outdoors.

Scenario 2: A Safari or Adventure Trip to Sub-Saharan Africa or South America

Imagine you're heading to Uganda to trek with mountain gorillas, or to Peru to walk the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. These are the kinds of trips that stay with you for a lifetime. They're also trips where one particular vaccine isn't just recommended — it may be compulsory for entry.

Yellow Fever is a potentially fatal viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, occurring in tropical regions of Africa and South America. The disease can cause jaundice, organ failure, and in severe cases, death. Many countries in these regions require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination as a condition of entry — not just a recommendation, but a legal requirement at the border, enforced via your International Certificate of Vaccination.

What many travellers don't realise is that not every GP clinic can administer this vaccine. Yellow Fever vaccination can only be given by clinics that have been officially authorised by the World Health Organisation. TSMP holds that authorisation — we are a WHO-approved Yellow Fever vaccination provider, which means we can administer the vaccine and issue the official International Certificate of Vaccination (sometimes called the "yellow card") that you'll need to present at border control.

The Yellow Fever vaccine is highly effective, with a single dose providing lifelong protection for most people. It is a live vaccine, however, which means it isn't suitable for everyone — including infants under nine months, people who are immunocompromised, and those with certain egg or vaccine component allergies. A proper pre-vaccination assessment is essential, and our doctors will work through your health history carefully before proceeding.

For an African safari or South American adventure, we'd also discuss malaria prophylaxis medication, Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid and, depending on your activities, Rabies pre-exposure vaccination.

Other Specialised Vaccines We Offer

Our Travel Clinic stocks and can arrange a wide range of specialised vaccines, including:

  • Japanese Encephalitis — recommended for travellers to rural Asia and the Western Pacific region, including Papua New Guinea; also available as a government-funded vaccine for certain industries

  • Q Fever — for travellers and workers with potential exposure to livestock

  • Rabies — pre-exposure vaccination for travellers visiting regions where rabies is endemic, particularly important for those spending extended time in rural areas or working with animals

  • QDenga - for those who have had Dengue fever previously and risk the serious haemorrhagic fever that can develop after a second infection. Specially ordered via TGA approval

  • Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Meningococcal, Tetanus, and more

We also dispense important travel medications, including malaria prophylaxis, traveller's diarrhoea treatment, and travel sickness medication — all available on the same visit.

When Should I Book?

Ideally, 4–6 weeks before your departure date — and for complex itineraries or vaccines requiring multiple doses (like TBE), even earlier is better. That said, it's never too late to come in. Even last-minute travellers can benefit significantly from a consultation, and many vaccines provide meaningful protection even when started close to departure.

Ready to Travel Safely?

Whether you're trekking through the forests of Central Europe, island-hopping through Southeast Asia, or heading to Africa for a once-in-a-lifetime safari, our team at TSMP is here to make sure you're protected every step of the way.
